Globally Employable End of 2010 Issue

Welcome to the end of 2010 Globally Employable review. Over the past 10 years since exiting the Navy, I’ve shared some of my favorite stories with folks and many of them have said that I should write a book.

It started out being called Bombs, Bullets and Babies and every chapter being named after a beer that was relevant in my life during that point. Red Stripe, San Miguel, Hefeweizen and Birra Moretti are all beers of note with very different stories.

After seeing the downturn in the economy, seeing myself struggle as a financial consultant, seeing the proverbial writing on the wall…Wall Street to be exact, starting my own company and all of the other people that are experiencing difficulty, I felt there were answers out there for those that are struggling.

After getting back into private investigations, UXO, executive protection and diving, I realized I was making great money and that the right person could do the same by attending certain training.

Globally Employable is born!

This website is my way of giving back for all of the success I’ve enjoyed as well as a short cut so others don’t have to waste time finding a better way to make ends meet. I’ve had interest from publishers. Some big and some small. I’ve looked at hardback and ebook formats. A hardback is like getting a record deal from a major label in Nashville. The ebook gives me the ability to market the way I believe is the best way.

Over the last 2 months that the site has been live, our traffic has increased significantly due to Google placement by the “system” I use for building web sites. We are currently in the top 350,000 websites in the world and in the top 85,000 sites in the US. May not seem great but considering how many sites there are in the world, we’re doing better than I could have hoped! The site costs me $300 per year. In terms of overhead, I have practically no outlay.

2010 was a crazy year for me as far as travel and work. I couldn’t go any further without thanking all of the guys I’ve worked with on the grid. Experiencing 14 degrees in South Carolina to 90 degrees and about the same humidity in Puerto Rico to cold, rainy and windy in Seattle, the work has kept me on my toes and solidified some life-long friendships. The ten days in Italy with my wife was incredible!

As I close out 2010 with goal setting for 2011, I’m taking time with family and friends to evaluate what is truly important. It’s been said that quality of time at work and quantity of time with family is what’s most important. Will I be home more this year? I doubt it but I am making plans to bring my family out to me wherever I’m working.

Looks like I’m back to Seattle the first week of January to continue diving for a 2 to 4 month job but with Blackberry in hand, I’ll be writing more Globally Employable as well as running SGC Group.

I’ll be starting out with about 145,000 Hilton Honors points, 80,000 Priority Club points, almost a free ticket on Southwest and enough Continental points for us to return to Italy for free. Not a bad start and I plan on building more so that I can take advantage of more fun places for vacation.

My goals are to release the book by July and start promoting the book with speaking engagements with stockbrokers, universities, schools and churches. If you know of an organization that is in need of a speaker I would appreciate the referral.

Some topics that I will cover is the geo-politics of oil and war, challenging fears and of course making a better living by being Globally Employable.

I may not be the best writer or speaker but then again, that’s not my goal. Being a New York Times Best Selling Author doesn’t make you the best writer but it does make you a living. The audience will leave with a better understanding on how to move forward in their journey and a serious side stitch from laughing at all the “interesting”, near death experiences I’ve had.

By summer, SGC Group plans on jobbing out UXO Techs and other similar trades to companies as the likes of Aerotek and MEC Personnel have failed their customers and their contract employees. We will continue to build our IED business centered on devices and training.

I believe we can make a positive impact in the community by providing the most well rounded Technicians in the US…and possibly OCONUS.

With that, I am looking at starting our own UXO school and will provide continuing education for Techs to make sure that they’re first on the list when a job comes up. Training will be intense! Training is the basis for making us all more employable. The more certifications that you can add to your resume, the more desirable and easy you become to justify hiring over someone else.

USACE, EPA and OSHA are becoming more strict with contracts requiring workers to have specific qualifications. When these guys show up on the job site, I feel very confident that they will move on to easier targets when they see my certifications.

I personally have HAZWOPER Supervisor, OSHA 30 Hour Construction and all my Red Cross certifications including my Red Cross Instructor. This paid off in a huge way on my last contract where everyone needed the Oxygen Administrator certification.

By providing the training, I took the stress off of my PM, the company’s owner, the Prime and the guys. No one wants to be sent home for not having the correct certifications.

I’d like to take this opportunity for you to evaluate your current certifications and see where you can pad your resume, making you more employable.

Again, I’d like to thank all of you for your support and passing the newsletters on to friends and family that you think will benefit from this information.

Have a great 2011, continued success and may you become Globally Employable.

Happy New Year!

Steve
