Now that you’re in UXO, you may be asking yourself how to get out of UXO to move on to the next phase of your working life.
The case of the Golden Handcuffs is a tough one to solve. It’s tough to leave UXO when you’re a Tech I making over $2000 a week to start something that is unsure or unpredictable.
Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune on starting off on a new business, new career or just swinging at the fence of fame and fortune. Some of those opportunities have worked out well for me and others not so well.
The great benefit of being an UXO Tech is that your certification doesn’t expire. You just need to update your HAZWOPER Refresher and get an updated physical.
If UXO travel is wearing you thin and you think it’s time to launch into something else, I want to encourage you to do that but STOP!
This past week, I was on the grid with several people that are looking at doing something else. Problem was they either had some idea of what they wanted to do or it was really no different than what they’re currently doing. We call that exchanging dollars for your time.
You have to be able to define exactly what it is that you want. This is not what you want to do as far as work but what you actually want out of life.
This is a tough question and it’s one that no teacher in school could ever teach you how to answer because they’ve never asked it themselves nor did they have someone explain how or more importantly “Why?” you should now exactly what you want out of life.
If you’re not constantly asking “Why” you’re doing something and then being able to justify the fact that you’re doing it, you need to stop doing it immediately. This is called Zero-Based Thinking. If you can’t define your “Why” then you’re bound to be stuck exactly where you’re at now.
So let’s start the process of breaking the UXO Golden Handcuffs!
Set an appointment for yourself to do this. Just like getting your OSHA physical, you need to show up a bit early and not have any distractions before starting. I highly recommend doing this first thing in the morning over coffee on your day off. No spouses, significant others, kids, friends, driving in traffic, etc.
In one sitting, write down a list of 100 things that you want to Do, want to Be and want to Have. This has to be strictly selfish. No writing down what you think some else thinks is best for you. This is all you pure and selfish.
Insert Jeopardy theme song here!
You have all 100? Congratulations! You are now a member of the most successful people in the world! Those that actually know what they want to Be, Do and Have.
On your list of 100 there are probably 4-7 things that are really sticking out. The most important things that if you accomplish them, your life will be totally changed for the best.
Of the 4-7 things on your list, there’s probably one or two that you can actually make money at. Don’t jump yet! If you do these one or two things, are you actually still trading your time for dollars?
How can you make money doing these one or two things when you’re working on them but also make money while you’re sleeping?
From here, I’m going to recommend that you read a great book by Tim
Ferriss, The 4 Hour Work Week! Yes, the 4 Hour, not days, Work Week!
The combination of your list of 100 and applying what Tim recommends, you’ll finally be able to break the Golden Handcuffs of UXO and live the life of your dreams.
