Commercial Diving Specialties
by: Steve Cassidy

Looking for commercial diving specialties that may interest you? We'll try to get you the answers you need before committing to a specific track.

My first recommendation is to define what you like to do for a career and then see if it can be done underwater.

If you like to weld, then underwater welding would be your best choice. You'd have to choke hoses on the side for a couple of years before getting the chance to dive. During off times, find a place that needs a welder so that you can fine-tune your skills above water.

My favorite is underwater UXO. The jobs don't come up all of the time but it is picking up. Most contracts require former Navy EOD Divers but that seems to be changing slowly as most of the Navy EOD Techs are working IED issues.

Look for the best commercial dive schools in your area and meet with them about what direction you'd like to go and see if that's an option.
