UXO Job Durations
by: Steve Cassidy

Job lengths are always contract driven and will vary greatly. I went to a job last year that was to be 6 weeks and it ended up being over 3 months.

This is kind of a glass half full answer and it doesn't get much better than that.

It can be very frustrating but you need to understand how contracting works.

You may get a call for a 6 week job and because the team was great, it gets done in 3 weeks. On the flip side it could go much longer due to weather, finding additional UXO and MEC outside the Scope of Work (SOW).

Again, this could be good or bad depending on your location. If you're in Hawaii and you get cut short, that kind of stinks but then again you just got paid to go to Hawaii.

It would be just as easy to get extended in Hawaii or the frozen tundra of Iowa in February.

Also, keep in mind the contract may be delayed due to funding, changes in contracts, the SOW, the Explosive Safety Submission (ESS), weather, the list goes on.

You're not supposed to get mad at the company that is hiring you when a delay pops up. They want the contract as much or more than you do but they can't pay you not to work.

Be sure to budget. Remember, you're making very good money and should be prepared to have some down time. For me that's a benefit. I actually enjoy a delay or two so I get to spend more time at home with the family, friends and Honey-Do list.
